Research at The Lullaby Trust

Our advice to parents and professionals is based on peer-reviewed research from around the world. This research helps us to identify why, when and where babies and toddlers may be at risk of sudden and unexpected death.

The Lullaby Trust has been funding cutting-edge research since 1971. In 1972, the organisation’s Welfare and Information Committee began drafting and circulating informational leaflets for parents and professionals, and delivering the first risk-reduction seminars to doctors, health visitors and midwives. The profile of both the organisation and of Sudden Infant Death began to rise, and donations to fund research grew. To this day, The Lullaby Trust has spent over £11 million on over 265 research projects to identify the mechanisms and risk factors to SIDS.

We are a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC). All AMRC members support the AMRC position statement on the use of animals in research.

Our ambition

Extensive research over the past 40 years has lead to a significant reduction in the number of babies dying suddenly and unexpectedly each year. But SIDS has not gone away. This is why The Lullaby Trust has developed a research and awareness-raising strategy with the aim of reducing the number of sudden and unexpected infant deaths by half, by the year 2020.

How we fund research

Each research application we receive is subject to a rigorous peer review process to ensure it meets our high standard of quality. Our Scientific Committee, made up of independent SIDS experts and bereaved family members, use their broad range of disciplines and perspectives to assess applications. They consider the scientific merit and relevance of the application to our work, as well as the views of our Lay Panel and several other external peer reviewers, chosen for their knowledge of the specific research area. The Scientific Committee then make an informed recommendation to our Board of Trustees, who hold the final decision on how we allocate research funds.

Conflicts of interest

Both the Scientific Committee and external reviewers are asked to declare any conflicts of interest. Those with conflicts are not permitted to discuss or provide comment on those applications. More about our conflict of interest policy can be found in our Scientific Committee Terms of Reference.
